The
most recent Hungarian and English written 2009 book (written by Prof.
dr. Sándor Faragó, Director of Institute of Wildlife Management and
Vertebrate Zoology, University of West- Hungary and commendation written
by Kai Wollscheid, General Director, CIC), Our Natural- Hunting Heritage – The Most Excellent Game- Trophies of Hungary says about it: “Without
exaggerating, the Gyulaj and the neighboring Tamási forests are
Hungary’s fallow deer ‘paradise’… 11 of the first 50 fallow deer
trophies on the world rank list come from Gyulaj“.
Originally the fallow deer was a native species in Central- Europe but in the Pleistocene the two latest glacial (ice) ages forced them to migrate to Eastern- Eurasia. The origin of nowadays' population and their range is the result of artifical reintroducing. The first reliable (written) historical source of the great Gyulaj population leads us back to the 16th century, but some archeologists say it is like enough that the Romans reintroduced it to many places in Europe as well as Hungary before Christ. The golden age of the local population was the 17- 18th century by the worldwide known great driven hunts organized by the local landlord family, the famous Count Esterházy's. Their wildlife management was well developed and the well- organized 2-3 weeks driven hunts were world wide known as many politicans and high ranking people were invited from many different countries such as the UK, France, Germany, etc. The 2-3 weeks driven hunts needed more than 6.000 beaters and dogs and mentioning the joined services the driven hunts gave job and food (venison) for 12-14.000 locals. The number of professional hunters, guides and staff was more than 200. The results of this driven hunts were more than 1.000- 1.200 taken big games, included fallow deers, red deers, wild boars, wolves, roe deers, foxes. The Esterházy's had special fences for this driven hunts, some of them were portable some of them were built by proper bricks.
In the 1960's and 70's the agricultural damage (caused by the deers) became so huge that a deicision was made to build a fence around the Gyulaj-Tamási forests to reduce the damage, to protect the excellent local genetical substance and to avoid the increasing poaching. By that time this area and this great population has given 4-5 world record fallow buck trophies to the world already. In the communism the hunting enthusiast politicans choosed the Gyulaj reserve to be a strictly protected hunting ground run only for high ranking Hungarian and international politicans. The second golden age begun then and it is still going on. The dense Gyulaj population, the great trophies in every season, the excellent features of our hunting grounds and the thousands of satisfied hunting clients keep the worldwide known hunting reputation alive.
Because of the excellence of this population, the Gyulaj fallow deer was utilized many times to introduce the species many places within Hungary and other countries of the world.
Worh to mention that the legendary Gyulaj- Kádár- fallow buck had been kept its 1st place on the world rank list for 20 years (1972-1992) which is still unique.
